Is it a excellent thought to take out loans for personal expenses while in college?
My husband and I are returning adult students and have in the past years worked very hard to achieve our associates degrees, we both work full-time jobs and have adult duties to our rent/utilities/car payments ect.
We are currently looking to go on to a university setting after achieveing all we can at cheap community colleges without taking out any loans.
Once we transfer schools we will be in need of taking out student loans as we do not qualify for any grants… I’m toying with the thought of taking out a personal loan to cover rent for the next 4 years (until we get out of graduate school), as I’m finding it harder and harder to maintain the grades I want working full-time. I would just like to opportunity to knock my working hours back down to part time level so I can focus more on school, and the only way that is possible is to take out a loan for rent.
Is this a excellent or terrible thought?
In my opinion it’s a terrible thought, covering your rent and expenses with a student loan is a small term solution to your monetary problems, and will make a sizeable debt for you when you graduate. Rather look for a scholarship to cover your tuition, and cut down on working hours if possible. Some scholarships also have stipends to cover living expenses.

That’s really a very creative thought. It all depends on your personal funds and weather you can afford it but if you can it sounds like a excellent thought.

as a rule of thumb! always start off at a community college, because they’re cheaper, and you can stay at home. And in doing that you can get a credit card–and build your credit history from there. This is helpful when you go to the university–where you will have to take out a loan, it’s better to have credit- history in your own name so you don’t become a burden to your parents.
